Collaboration between departments on company projects is the modus operandi of large organizations. However, many times, departments may find it hard to understand each other. Finding a formula that works for multidisciplinary tasks is vital to achieving company goals and targets.

One way for managers to foster healthy interdepartmental engagement is by providing a context for it. Define what the project is about and what a good outcome will look like. Communicate why interdepartmental collaboration is important for the project and how it fits into the overall company goals. This gives direction to employees, enabling them to identify areas where they can offer their input.

Developing a common language is another component of successful interdepartmental collaboration. Department-specific language should be avoided, however if it is absolutely necessary, it should be explained to outsiders. The consequence of departmental jargon is miscommunication which may hinder effective engagement.
